STEM Snapshot: August 12-September 6, 2019

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! My name is Ms. Naomi Meredith and I am RHL's Kindergarten-5th grade STEM teacher. (You can learn more about me by clicking here.) During the Integrated Arts Rotation (specials), your child comes to STEM 3 times a month, for 45 minute sessions.

This year, they will also receive an additional bonus 40 minute STEM time once every three weeks.

For this first month, all grade levels dove into digital citizenship.  We will continue to refer back to these topics year round. While technology tools are going to change, students will still always need strong skills to interact appropriately online, be kind and keep themselves safe.

K-5 Learning Target: I can make good choices online and when I use technology by learning strategies for being a good digital citizen.

Below is an overview of what each grade level learned as well as parent resources to continue these conversations at home.

Kindergarten & 1st Grade: Media Balance

Having a healthy balance of using technology and activities without.
To understand the vocabulary of "balance" students were given materials to create a balance on their own.

2nd Grade: Private vs. Personal Information
Knowing what information about yourself (as a kid) is safe and not safe to share online.

We referred to our class anchor chart on what is safe and not safe to share online as a kid.

3rd Grade: Mindful Posting
Reviewing private & personal information and thinking before you post.
4th Grade: Being Kind Online
How to be an upstander to online situations (gaming, texting, video chats...)
5th Grade: Keeping Information Secure & Spotting Not-Secure Sites
Being able to spot situations where sites and other online scams are trying to steal your private information

3rd, 4th & 5th grade applied their digital citizenship knowledge in their corresponding "kingdom" in Google Interland.
